Welcome to Castles and Stuff!
This has been such a long time coming. I am so excited to finally be able to share my passion with all of you. Simply put, my passion is everything castles - and more specifically, castles and stuff like fortresses, palaces, manor houses, abbeys, stone circles, Roman forts, Greek ruins, Egyptian pyramids...and you get the point 🙂
Castle history in the making
When I was growing up, history was sometimes a pretty dry subject in school. It was hours of reading boring text books and regurgitating why people who have been dead for thousands of years did the things they did. Especially growing up in Europe, there were stone piles and ancient ruins everywhere we went. As a kid, it was hard to imagine what all the stuff was good for.
But, I was always so excited about visiting actual standing castles. I loved exploring the buildings and finding their secret passages and hidden chambers. I was enthralled by medieval weapons demonstrations and re-enactments. I even learned to sew my own medieval costumes. Somehow there was something really magical about all that. And it was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with everything castle.
Castles and technology
As I got older, I started to appreciate the stone piles as time capsules of our colorful history. The boring, dry school subject finally came to life. When I was able to access the Internet for the first time, I didn't sleep for days. There was so much information out there! I no longer had to walk to the library and search through dozens of books to find something (although I love books).
Thanks to technology like 3D rendering, I was able to "see" what would have been hundreds or thousands of years ago. With drones, I was able to explore castles from the air. With Google Earth, I could "fly" to any castle I wanted. Technology opened the door to another dimension of history and it's the combination of my love for castles with my love for technology that finally made this adventure possible.
Moving with my husband, Jordan, from Canada to France in 2017, we made the change from traditional 9-5 jobs to working online. This paved the way to living and working in Europe and exploring castles at the same time. Now it's time to share our discoveries with you. I will showcase all the amazing castles and other stuff we find along the way!
What's next?
Make sure you check this blog for everything castle. And then hop over to our other social media channels, for more content. I can't wait to get the first castles posted and kick this adventure into high gear. We'll be starting off in our local region - the Bretagne. It goes without saying that we have hundreds of historical monuments right at our doorstep. But, as we get travelling, we'll expand to everything else Europe has to offer as well.
Happy castle-ing!
